African Lion
(Panthera leo)

Local names by region in Uganda.

The African lion is one of the most recognisable carnivores, inhabiting savannahs across Uganda, including Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks.

Unlike most cats, lions are highly social, living in prides made up of related females, cubs, and a few males. Lionesses lead coordinated hunts, targeting prey such as buffalo and antelope.

In Uganda’s Ishasha sector, lions display the rare behaviour of climbing fig trees. A lion’s roar can be heard up to 8 kilometres away. What is often overlooked is that each lion’s roar is unique, almost like a signature, allowing individuals to recognise each other across vast distances.
