“I Thought Money Would Come Fast, But I Learned Something Greater”

“When I joined the program, I thought I would start making money immediately. But I have learned something more valuable—patience. I realized that before the money comes, I have to learn. Learn how to make the products, understand the materials, and find the right customers. Now, I know that when the money starts coming, it will be worth the wait.

I run a small stall selling breakfast escorts like samosas, but it doesn’t bring enough. I dream of earning enough to pay my rent comfortably. Now, I have more options with the skills I have learnt. I have learned to make jewelry from banana fibers, raffia, hard paper, and small bits of kitenge fabric—things I can easily find in the community. It’s a business with real potential.

But this is about more than just money. Women need their own income. When you depend too much on a husband or family, it can lead to things like gender-based violence. I have seen it happen. But with my own earnings, I have freedom. I have choices. And most importantly, I can give my children a future that isn’t built on survival, but on possibility.”
