While still young, I used to go to my friend’s home to play on his bicycle. I loved bicycles so much to the extent I used to tell my father to buy them for me every time I saw someone riding them. When I grow up, I will buy my son a bicycle because I know how enjoyable it feels to own one. – Mulukusa I

Emelyne, 18 years, Burundian She loves art and her parents as well.Ā Since she doesn’t study, she spends most of her time practising art at Youth Rescue Organisation, located in the Nakivalee refugee settlement. Ever since she left Burundi and came to Uganda, it has not been easy for her and her family, but she is grateful that art has kept her mind focused and active. She wants to become a professional artist and become good at painting. She also wants to become an art teacher to pass on her knowledge to other people. Being part of the exhibition is a great opportunity for her to show her talent. Most people think that refugees, especially girls’ can’t do anything. However, she believes that when they see her painting, this mindset will change. She hopes to gain visibility for her works and make some sales to buy materials and continue painting. She advises young girls like her to learn skills like art to help them in the future.

On the days we dont go to school, we talk amongst ourselves to wake up early so that we can do our chores in time. When any of us is finished with her chores at their home, we go to help those that haven’t. When we are all done, we go for playing. Some days, we play football, dodge ball but the most interesting one is skipping the rope because we all love it. My artwork is about rope skipping – Daphine

“SMILING IN HEAVEN” is an abstract poetry I wrote about blacks who are facing racial discrimination in 2022 around the world especially in UK & USA…
Blacks are getting killed but the government doesn’t seem to care enough about that and Chris Kaba, the one I used as deference was a 23 years old young black man, who got shoot and killed by police officers on September 5, 2022 from UK.
This artwork raises awareness of people about racial justice, Human Rights and Police brutality, it makes sure to remind people that blacks lives matter because no human is more human than an other.

Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda because it provides us with food. When you plant your seeds, you have a hope to harvest at the right time. When you don’t plant, there’s nothing to harvest at all.Ā This artwork is of me together with my mother and young sister while planting some vegetables in our backyard garden.Ā –Najjuma
